Hobart - April - 2018

A week in Hobart from April 7 -14.

We stayed in a loft AirBnb with views across Bellerive Yacht Club.

A diver prepares to descend at the Brooke Street Pier.

The Gif is compiled of 134 still frames.
The frames may take time to load.
Each frame was originally a 12mgb image.
The camera was hand held for the duration and shot
through the mesh of a fence.
The original posting has been titled and edited to adjust the timing
and draw out the content of a few frames.

When the dam is full it will provide an infinity pool view from the cottage currently being restored behind.

Dog & bone
The previous property owner shot the wallabies that came onto the property and left the carcasses
in a creek bed. No shortage of bones for poochy.

A bit windy. At the ferry terminal waiting to return.

A 2 car collision in the city of Hobart caused a bottle neck for kms and hours.

This little fellow migrated from the museum display onto the back of my hand.

The image of the sailing ship below is from a glass plate negative held in my collection.
A friend identified it, subject to confirmation, as the May Queen, and the Port as Hobart.
The May Queen is an historic sailing ship currently moored at the wharf in Hobart as the photos
show.

- the making of a Lantern Slide Catalogue - but first........

- the making of a Lantern Slide Catalogue - but first........

how to?

A photo tells a story.
1. Copy the slides
OK thats the 'how to'.
2. I am using a Nikon D90, 50mm f1.8D lens
with 12mm extension tube
the camera is mounted to a base via a 1/4" screw
3. I made a lantern slide carrier
there will be small variations in the
lens to subject distance a stable carrier is required
mine is not fixed to the base
the lens carrier can slide along the base
a mark on the base is the distance
at which the subject is in focus.
3. I use a Nikon SB900 flash on TTl
The camera is set to Aperture Priority f8.
4. Liveview can be used and auto focus
works OK on the relatively cheap
extension tube set recently acquired.
5. I bounce the flash off of a white backboard
6. A black card(not shown) rests on the top of the lens
and the top of the lantern slide carrier
this stops flare from the flash to the front of the slide
which is illuminated from the rear by flash bounce
from the white card.

So far so good
and now the result

The lantern slide is reproduced here at 72dpi.
The full size file shows in detail the 'For Sale' sign on the boat by the fisherman,
the 'Henry Simpson & Son Coalyard' sign on the far wharf, horse feeding
coal? cart and driver, people outside a hotel etc.

the original slide was produced by:
this is an iPhone photo

A catalogue will be produced by copying the slides and arranging them in sequence.
Gifs will be produced from the sequences which will form the basis of the catalogue.

and the setup can also be used to copy glass plate negatives.
This positive was produced from a glass plate neg.

Obahn Busway Adelaide Tunnel Entrances Saturday 27 January 2018

A warm 36C in Adelaide today.
My knees were aching for a bike ride.
I cycled in to take some photographs of the new
$160M  Obahn Busway Tunnel opened on
Monday 11 December 2017.
